backing up eclicker playlists and questions

Edward Wojcik Sep 26, 2017 10:41AM EDT

Where does eClicker store system files including playlists and/or questions on my mac? I'd like to know for two reasons: first, I would like to ensure these files are being backed up in case current files get corrupted or damaged. Second, I would like to clean out vestigial eClicker files from older versions (e.g. bignerdranch files) that are stored in various places, and need to know which are essential and which are deprecated. I currently rely on exporting playlists and questions, but there may be issues, such as impaired backwards compatibility of playlist files after software revisions occur.

eClicker stores its data in an iOS standard way. So the eClicker data is backed up when you back up (sync) your device with iTunes or iCloud. You can also export playlists manually as a backup mechanism and then import them later.

The OS X app saves its data in a private application folder. The data is stored in a database so it isn't useful outside the application. If you use OS X's time machine feature to backup your Mac then it would include this database, but otherwise your only option is to export a playlist and backup that file (which is what I'd recommend, so that you have control).

An older version of eClicker did sync data between Mac and iOS, but that feature turned out to be buggy so it was removed. Unfortunately I'm no longer actively developing eClicker so I don't think a feature like that will be added again. Now I'm just fixing bugs to keep it running, and speaking of which, I got a report of an issue with eClicker on the latest version of OS X 10.13. I'll investigate it as soon as I can.
